(#9) The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is both parable play and fantastic spectacle, warning of the dangers of a desperate populace handing over power to a corrupt leader. In The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Brecht recasts Hitler as Arturo Ui, a small town mobster in 1930’s Chicago. Bolstered by illusions and thug tactics, Arturo Ui rapidly ascends to a position of power and respectability over an economically self-interested public.
